8 Classic Lebanese Dishes You Need To Try

baljinder9

Lebanese cuisine is popular for dining out and ordering in because of its beautiful fresh and flavourful meals. These Mediterranean dishes are bold and rich in flavour as they are prepared with ingredients like garlic, olive oil, and lemon juice. Lebanese food also tends to be healthier since dishes usually contain plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and fresh meats.

There are lots of traditional Lebanese dishes worth trying. Here is a quick look at eight classics you absolutely must indulge in when you visit an authentic Lebanese restaurant.

  1. Hommos with Lamb and Pine Nuts

Hommos, also known as hummus, is a classic in Lebanese restaurants and is often enjoyed by locals. This spicy dish is crafted from chickpeas and topped up with delicious seared lamb that gives lots of fragrance and pine nuts that complement the flavour of the hummus and lamb.

This traditional dish is best enjoyed along with some fresh pita bread cut into wedges so you can easily scoop the hummus dish out of the bowl. It is one of the most traditional dishes you can order if you enjoy meals with a nutty or tangy taste.

  1. Kibbeh

Kibbeh is one of the most interesting dishes to sample when you visit a Lebanese eatery and is one of Lebanon and Syria’s national dishes. The dish has a very interesting appearance since the center is layered with a crunchy shell that is filled with spicy minced beef with almond slivers.

  1. Kibbeh Nayyeh

If you think that two Kibbeh won’t be enough to fill you up or if you prefer more variety then we recommend the Kibbeh Nayyeh meal. This dish includes the traditional beef tartare or Kibbeh that everyone loves but it is served with extras. The extras included are fresh herbs, vegetables like sliced tomatoes, and some house made dukkah crackers.

  1. Tabbouleh Salad

Tabbouleh salad is one of the most unique salads to give a try. This salad mostly consists of finely chopped parsley which gives the dish a strong flavour. The salad also has some tomatoes, mint leaves, and shallots and a little bit of bulgur is added to make the salad more filling and textured. This traditional Lebanese salad is very refreshing and a must if you need a light, yet filling meal.

  1. Fattoush Salad

Fattoush Salad is a great selection if you love traditional garden salads but with a twist. This salad also includes some fried bread pieces and is dressed with sumac, lemon juice, and pomegranate molasses. The dressing provides a very unique taste while the fried bread adds extra crunch and texture to the meal.

  1. Knafeh

Knafeh is a traditional Arabic dessert. The oven-baked dessert is made with a spun pastry that is called kataifi. This pasty is soaked in a sugary syrup and layered with cheese and other ingredients before it is placed in the oven.

Even though the dessert has lots of cheese filling, it is very sweet with a crispy exterior and creamy interior.

  1. Falafel

Falafel is always a good idea and a must if you haven’t tried it before! These deep-fried balls are crunchy to bite in and taste best when they are paired with a delicious dip such as tahini sauce and our house made pickles.

  1. Baklava

If you love desserts that are on the crispier or chewy side, you will love the light crunch of baklava - a beloved staple all over the Levant, Turkey, Iran, Greece, the Balkans and even North Africa! These treats are made with layers of filo pastry and are then filled with pistachios and syrup or honey. The result is a crunchy dessert that is sweet and very decadent.
